INTO THE BADLANDS

The Great Plains hold a secret. Miles of seemingly endless prairie suddenly give way to a tear in the featureless landscape—as if some mighty giant had rent the earth with a colossal axe—revealing a hidden world beneath. Just beware: it is easy to get lost in the Badlands. I first entered them more than a decade ago, and I still haven’t quite found my way out.

A photograph should say as much about the
artist
as it does about the subject.
