HE PASSING OF THE SEASON IS MARKED BY AN AUTUMN LEAF TRAPPED IN ICE. Locked away all winter, spring's thaw releases it from its icy prison. Frothing bubbles float on the surface, resting atop frozen bubbles still secured deep within the blue. March 2004, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.
