Smith Island on the Chesapeake Bay stubbornly clings
to an old way of life, while the world around it
changes at breakneck speed. Severed from the
mainland, Smith Islanders have developed a unique
economy, culture, dialect, and way of life. The
island's rich cultural and natural resources are in
peril, threatened by declining oyster and crab
populations and rising seas. Only 300 Smith
Islanders remain, and it is likely that within the
next few decades, Smith Island will disappear
altogether, lost beneath the waves like Atlantis of
old. Although some of the island is already in a
state of decay, it still retains the charm and
spirit of better days.
