Laguna Amarga, Torres del Paine

This image is from my latest eBook Patagonia Behind the Lens, which takes you behind the scenes for the making of twenty of my favorite images from Patagonia. I made this image at dawn, looking into the famous Horns of Paine, on the shores of a large lake ringed with a narrow salt pan. The salty mud on the shore looked deceptively solid, but if you stepped into it, within [...]

New eBook: Patagonia Behind the Lens

I’ve just released my latest eBook Patagonia Behind the Lens. In this new series of eBooks, “Behind the Lens,” I present a collection of photographs, and take you behind the scenes for a step-by-step description of how each was made. The focus of these books is on the technical and artistic choices, including use of light, composition selection, equipment choices, and camera settings. This book presents twenty of my favorite photographs [...]

Cloudburst, Laguna de Los Tres, Patagonia

I love to photograph bad weather when it is breaking up. Great things happen when storms start to dissipate, especially at sunrise or sunset. This image was taken in Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, part of the Patagonia region. My workshop group and I hiked into the backcountry, and several hours before dawn rose from our tents to ascend over 1200 feet to Laguna de Los Tres, perched high [...]

Epic Patagonia photo workshop 2012

I’ve just listed my Epic Patagonia photo workshop (which I co-lead with Richard Bernabe) for 2012. Yes, I know it is a year away, but the level of early interest for this workshop has been astounding, and we’ve already received registrations! For next year, the workshop is going to be “road friendly,” without some of the more difficult back country stuff we had this year. Patagonia, a land of jagged peaks, [...]

Color not good? Try black & white!

Often I find myself in a situation where composition and mood come together nicely, but there just isn’t much color in the scene. Black & white conversion is the perfect solution to the problem. Black & white images work particularly well for landscape scenes that have lots of dramatic clouds. Such a situation arose recently while leading my Epic Patagonia workshop. My group and I hiked from our backcountry camp to [...]

A Sense of Place

My latest post to the Outdoor Photographer blog discusses the importance of creating a Sense of Place within your photos, of telling a story unique to the land you are photographing. The following image is featured in the post, taken during my recent Patagonia trip. The image, of Monte Fitz Roy partially obscured by a raging storm, was made during a three-day backcountry excursion with my workshop group. When we got [...]

Composition tip: look for graphic shapes to add drama to your photos

I am always looking for opportunities to use shapes when creating my nature photo compositions. The human brain tends to react to shapes, and to categorize random elements into shapes in an effort to simplify the world around us—think of the way we have organized stars into constellations and you can easily see my point. Using shapes when composing nature photos helps simplify chaotic elements for viewers so that your images [...]

Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre in twilight, Patagonia

Laguna Torre is a glacier-fed lake that lies below Cerro Torre, one of the most beautiful icons of Patagonia. “Cerro” means hill in Spanish, a word that does not quite do justice to this dramatic pointy granite spire. Rising 10,262 feet above sea level, this colossus of rock and ice rebuffed climbers until 1974 when an Italian expedition made the first undisputed ascent, 21 years after the conquest of Everest. All [...]

Los Cuernos, Torres del Paine, Patagonia

My latest post to the Outdoor Photographer blog, The Power of Photography, discusses the link (albeit sometimes tenuous) between photography and reality, and how that link differentiates photography from other forms of art. The image below, taken in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, appears in the post. I made this image on the final morning of my just completed Epic Patagonia photo workshop, which I co-led with fellow Creative [...]

Paso del Cuadrado, Los Glaciares, Patagonia

I’ve got an upcoming article in the February issue of Popular Photography magazine on Patagonia. I made my first visit to Patagonia in March 2010, and I will be returning in March 2011 to lead a photo workshop. By the way, we still have a few spaces left, so sign up now! Patagonia is an epic place, a land of forbidding mountains and more glaciers than you can shake a [...]

Shoot what inspires you

This one is short and sweet. Don’t worry too much about creating photographs that are beautiful and inspiring. Don’t worry too much about getting oohs and aahs. Don’t worry too much about ensuring that your work is original or creative. Don’t worry too much about whether your photos are “art” or not. Don’t worry too much about whether your photos will sell or if people will like them or if A-list celebrities will hang them on the walls of their [...]
