Luminous Clear

I’d like to depart from my usual fare to respond to a request from a reader who has suffered a tragic loss, and who is looking for some inspiration and comfort in a trying time. I took this image recently and had named it after a quote from Normam Maclean, which I share below. The quote seems appropriate somehow—I hope it brings some measure of peace in this trying time. The image was taken at sunrise on the Atlantic Ocean from Assateague Island National Seashore in Virginia. “At  sunrise everything is luminous but not clear. It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us. You can love completely without complete understanding.” —Norman  Maclean, A River Runs Through It and Other Stories (1976).

  • I lost my father to cancer last year and this image almost had me in tears as it brought back memories of a road trip I did with him, helping him with part of his “Bucket List”.

    • Hi David, so sorry to hear of your loss.

  • He was a national treasure in my opinion. “River” is one of my all time favorite books (and movies). And the next image I do like this where I think Bah..no subject, I’m going to avoid pressing delete and think of this post.

    • Hi agree Michael – “River” is really excellent!

  • Very nice tribute and beautiful image!
