Red fox, Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is the kind of place that can turn even a hardcore landscape shooter like myself into a critter guy. Wildlife abounds, and one can’t help but point a lens when a coyote, bison, or elk ambles by. Although arguably too small to be considered “charismatic megafauna,” the red fox of Yellowstone are very popular despite their lack of physical stature. Their flashy red coats and colorful antics make them a joy to watch, even in the cold of winter.

Of course, the only red fox I saw were sleeping. I photographed two fox during my most recent trip to Yellowstone, waiting for a long time in the cold for each to wake up. For the second fox, I waited for two hours. For the fox featured here, my wait was only about a half-hour. The fox was clearly unconcerned by my presence, and perhaps a bit bored with being photographed, as evidenced by the deep yawn. Shortly after this image was taken, the fox got up and moved along, heading out of camera range within a few moments. I would have preferred to capture an image of the fox hunting for mice in the snow, but I’ll take what I can get!

Technical details: Canon 1D Mark III camera, 500mm lens, ISO 400, f/11, 1/800 second.

  • Great capture Ian. Those intimate moments are where the wildlife definitely has an edge over the landscapes!

  • This is beautiful, Ian! Its red coat looks so striking against the snow, and it’s such a great moment with the curl to the tongue!
